Leeds United could make a move for Hoffenheim midfielder, Florian Grillitsch, as they club seeks out potential replacements for Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips is yet to sign a new deal with the Whites and is continually being linked with a move away. Clubs like Manchester United, Newcastle, and Aston Villa are all thought to be keen on the England midfielder.

And according to TeamTalk, Leeds have identified Grillitsch as a potential replacement for Phillips, should he move on from Elland Road. Grillitsch, 26, is being eyed by a number of clubs himself after some impressive performances for Hoffenheim this season.

Arsenal are believed to be one of the clubs keen on the Austrian, who is one of a number of players in Europe who can leave for nothing this summer.

Grillitsch, who Julian Nagelsmann described as an ‘exceptional footballer’, would fill the void left by Phillips due to his natural ability to sit as a deep lying midfielder. Of course, Leeds want to keep hold of their main man in the middle of the park. But making contingency plans will be an important part of this summer’s transfer strategy.

And to be honest, that’s with or without losing Phillips. Sure, he’d come in and replace the Englishman and play in the middle of the park.

However, you have to think that Leeds will want more squad depth next season and even if they do keep Phillips, Grillitsch seems like a smart signing for nothing.

Leeds have all but assured their place in the Premier League again next term. It goes without saying, though, that summer recruitment and decisions made in the coming months will be massive. Jesse Marsch will want backing, and Grillitsch is the sort of standard of player he’ll be keen to attract.
