Report: Leeds set sights on midfielder with ‘an incredible gift’ who played at Euro 2020

Leeds United have joined the race to snap up Florian Grillitsch this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Whites reportedly have competition from the likes of Arsenal, West Ham, Newcastle and Everton.

Leeds have endured a difficult season in which they’ve been battling relegation from the Premier League.

Although the Whites are on the right track, they definitely need to bolster their ranks to kick on next season.

In addition, Kalvin Phillips remains linked with other clubs including Manchester United.

Though he appears likely to commit his future to Elland Road, Leeds must nonetheless be ready to source a replacement.

Grillitsch, a 26-year-old Austria international with plenty of experience at the highest level, wouldn’t be a bad shout.

The 6ft 2in Hoffenheim powerhouse is out of contract this summer.

His representatives have reportedly sounded out Premier League sides plus elite clubs in Germany and Spain.

As per the Daily Mail, Grillitsch operates in a similar defensive midfield position to Phillips, and can also play at centre-back.

Grillitsch played at Euro 2020, helping Austria reach the second round of the competition.

His nation gave eventual winners Italy a tough game in the last 16, taking them to extra time.

Julian Nagelsmann, who previously managed Hoffenheim, waxed lyrical about Grillitsch in 2020.

“In my opinion, Flo Grillitsch is one of the best players in the Bundesliga,” Sky Sports Austria quoted him as saying.

“He still has room for improvement, he knows that, I’ve told him that often enough.

“But he is an exceptional footballer and has an incredible gift for setting the rhythm of the game.”
