Leeds United transfer news: Joe Gelhardt makes decision on his future
Leeds United starlet Joe Gelhardt is all set to leave the club on loan and re-join Wigan Athletic on loan.
The Athletic report that the club the Whites signed the forward from have now come forward to take him until the end of the season.
They claim that Swansea were keen on landing Gelhardt, and they sit 11th in the Championship, three points off the final play-off place.
Wigan, by contrast, are rock bottom, four points adrift of safety, but the Leeds prospect has decided he wants to go back there.
Gelhardt set to join former club Wigan on loan
Gelhardt has just one Premier League start this season, and club record signing Georginio Rutter’s arrival will further limit his opportunities now.
That has led Leeds to make the striker available for loan, and it seems like his affinity with the Latics has influenced his decision.
If the deal goes through, it should represent a chance for Gelhardt to get regular games and score goals, even if it means going into the pressure of a relegation battle.
Gelhardt was dubbed ‘incredible‘ by Jermaine Jenas after one particular piece of skill last year and looks to have a huge future in the game.
The report underlines that the youngster is a part of Leeds’ long-term plans and that he has an Elland Road contract until 2027.
The move should work for all parties, provided Wigan are prepared to throw Gelhardt straight into their battle for survival and the pressure is something Gelhardt thrives from.
