BBC pundit amazed by Joe Gelhardt's 'incredible' assist in Leeds draw

Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day 2 that Joe Gelhardt’s assist for Leeds United on Sunday was incredible, and suggested that you may not see a better piece of skill than the one the striker produced.

Leeds go into the final day knowing that they will have an opportunity to stay in the Premier League. Currently, they find themselves outside the bottom three after drawing with Brighton.

It had appeared that they were heading for another loss at the weekend. The Seagulls had taken the lead in the first-half. And Leeds lacked real quality and composure in front of goal.

But that changed in stoppage-time when Gelhardt received the ball from Diego Llorente. He somehow managed to lift the ball over Lewis Dunk in a tight space before chipping a cross to the back post where Pascal Struijk was to nod home the dramatic equaliser.

Jesse Marsch has lauded Gelhardt, while Patrick Bamford was also full of praise for the 20-year-old. And Jenas suggested that he has done amazingly well to leave Leeds with a lifeline.

“This bit of skill here is one of the best bits of skill you’re going to see all year from a lad who stuck at it all game and provided the assist for potentially what is going to be a goal that could keep them in the league,” he told Match of the Day 2.

“That bit of skill there from Gelhardt is incredible. I can’t tell you how isolated he was at times today. But to deliver that in a moment that was needed for Struijk to get the goal, the place went crazy.”

Joe Gelhardt’s assist will be played over and over again if Leeds stay up

Of course, Sunday’s draw will mean little if Leeds do not stay up. It is not in their hands, with Burnley and Everton both boasting a game in hand.

But the draw has ensured that Leeds cannot be relegated before the final day. They still have a chance.

And it should not be a surprise if Gelhardt has one final say on how the relegation battle plays out.
