Leeds reportedly want £34.3m star who's 'like Kante' as Phillips replacement, he'd 'appease the fans'

Leeds United have reportedly agreed a deal to sell Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City.

According to The Athletic, the Whites and the Citizens have held positive discussions over a fee.

David Ornstein has reported that Leeds will receive an initial £42million, with £3million in potential add-ons.

Leeds, who have already signed Marc Roca, will now move ‘to recruit another proven player in that position’.

One of the options Jesse Marsch is reportedly monitoring is RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams.

And the 23-year-old would be a great shout for Leeds.

Adams has impressed for club and country, making 102 appearances for Leipzig and winning 18 United States caps.

He has also worked with Marsch before.

The coach gave Adams his debut as a 16-year-old at New York Red Bulls.

The pair were then reunited at Leipzig in 2019 when Marsch was Ralf Rangnick’s assistant manager.

Adams has since fallen behind the likes of Konrad Laimer, Amadou Haidara and Kevin Kampl in the pecking order,

Leipzig have reportedly told him he can leave – so his availability won’t be a problem.

Last year, SportBILD – via Sport Witness – reported that Adams has a €40m (£34.3m) release clause.

Can Leeds land Kante / Fabinho 2.0?

Despite admitting that number 6 is his favourite position, Adams is an incredibly versatile player.

Over the course of his career, he has also played in central midfield, on the wings, at full-back and at centre-back.

And in terms of style of play, Adams has previously said he’s “more like (N’Golo) Kante” than Busquets.

He also sees Liverpool and Brazil star Fabinho as an inspiration.

“He does a little bit of everything,” Adams told The Athletic.

“I like how well-rounded his game is and I want my game to be as well-rounded as possible.”

“Would sort of appease the fans”

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has tipped Adams to be a good replacement for Phillips.

“I think it’d be a great way to replace Phillips if they were to go out and buy someone like Tyler Adams,” he wrote on GiveMeSport.

“Who’s an American international and has played at the highest level in the Champions League for RB Leipzig.

“So, somebody like that would sort of appease the fans who are maybe upset at the fact that Kalvin Phillips might be leaving to go to Manchester City.”
