Leeds make inspired decision with contract announcement
Leeds United have kicked off their summer business by making an announcement concerning a new contract for Tyler Roberts.
It is little surprise to see Leeds address Roberts’s future at Elland Road. His previous contract expired next summer.
There have been links with a £10 million move to Newcastle. And had he not agreed fresh terms, the Whites would have surely considered selling him this year.
Nevertheless, handing Roberts a new deal may not have been an easy decision for Leeds.
And that is why what Leeds have agreed seems to be such an inspired piece of business.
The club have confirmed on their official website that Roberts has signed a three-year deal.
Based on the Wales international’s form this past season, that appears to be the perfect contract length.
As things stand, some fans may have their doubts over Roberts’s long-term future. It is not yet entirely clear what his best position is in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
And with Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo looking outstanding at times, it does appear that Roberts is not quite ready to hold down a starting role in the top flight.
So not agreeing a four or five year deal looks to be a smart decision.

However, what a three-year deal does do is leave Leeds in a strong position if Roberts builds on some of his best displays.
He was the best player on the pitch in the draw with Chelsea. He cleared a major hurdle with a smartly-taken goal against Southampton. And he did step up in the number 10 role towards the end of the campaign.
If that is a sign of what is to come, Leeds have an amazing talent on their hands.
And they now have scope to extend his terms further while under little pressure.
Leeds have left the ball in Roberts’s court with a three-year contract. And they have put themselves in an incredibly strong position if he realises his frightening potential.
