Returning to Tottenham Hotspur this summer after a stunning loan spell at Norwich City, Oliver Skipp was expected to remain at Spurs. There was a belief that he is now good enough to have an impact in the senior side. But a report suggests a u-turn, and Leeds have got to be on red alert.

Skipp, 20, played 47 of Norwich’s 49 games throughout 2020-21 as the Canaries returned to the Premier League at the first attempt. He was absolutely integral to Daniel Farke’s side. His defensive screen in midfield helped Norwich keep 18 Championship clean sheet – a serious feat.

Impressing in pre-season with an array of passing against the likes of Colchester and MK Dons – Skipp was expected to shine under Nuno Espirito Santo. But The Athletic claim that Spurs could end up sending him on loan and Leeds have got to take a look at bringing him in for the 2021-22 season.

Why Leeds have got to consider a loan for Tottenham star Skipp

Well, Leeds need a midfielder. They have been after cover for Kalvin Phillips and more depth to replace Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas when needed. Nahitan Nandez, Rodrigo De Paul and Jens Cajuste are names that have been linked. But a loan deal for Skipp is ideal.

Two reasons. Firstly, Leeds look reportedly set to miss out on Conor Gallagher of Chelsea. In what would be a similar deal to a dry loan for Skipp, Gallagher is said to have agreed terms with Leeds before choosing to join Crystal Palace. He even had a tour of the club’s Thorp Arch facilities.

Secondly, Norwich have already got Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea – replacing Skipp’s departure. So Norwich’s need for Skipp, though still likely to be great, is hardly as big as it once was. Leeds could offer him regular game time, and cover for Phillips when the England ace is unavailable.

It makes sense for Leeds to sign the England Under-21 ace.
