Report: Conor Gallagher underwent Leeds medical before Crystal Palace decision
Leeds United came so close to signing Conor Gallagher that the midfielder had had a medical ahead of a potential loan move from Chelsea, according to a report from 90min.
The Whites had been looking to sign Gallagher with Marcelo Bielsa keen to bolster his options in the middle of the park.
The 21-year-old has previously impressed on loan with Charlton, Swansea and, most recently, West Brom.
And it seemed that they had agreed terms with the Blues youngster ahead of a season-long loan at Elland Road.
However, it actually appears that a move was even further down the line.
According to 90min, Gallagher underwent a medical before changing his mind and deciding to join Crystal Palace.
Leeds understandably frustrated after Gallagher medical
Gallagher looked to be the kind of player who could really thrive in a Bielsa side. He brings plenty of energy and versatility to a midfield.
So missing out is a big blow. And they will be hoping that they are not made to rue coming so close to getting a deal across the line.
Palace have done some fantastic business in this window. And landing Gallagher on loan has the potential to be another inspired deal.
Leeds meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere for that central midfield signing Bielsa craves.
History repeating itself for Whites after Harvey Barnes disappointment
For some Leeds fans, the reports may evoke memories of their failure to land Harvey Barnes back in 2018.
As reported by the Express and Star, Barnes went so far as to pick out a shirt number before deciding against a move to Leeds. Instead, he joined West Brom.
Barnes was outstanding with the Baggies before being recalled in January of that season by Leicester. And he has gone on to kick on with the Foxes.
Of course, the pain is less severe with Leeds looking at a loan. But it is still likely to be incredibly infuriating as Bielsa’s men look to progress in their second year back in the top flight.
