Leeds fans react to Joe Gelhardt display at Manchester City

A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the performance of Joe Gelhardt as the Whites suffered a humiliating defeat at Manchester City on Tuesday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s struggles with injuries caught up with them. They produced a colossal effort to nearly take a point away with them from Chelsea at the weekend.

The opening goal was a calamity from Leeds’ perspective. Illan Meslier failed to gather the ball as Rodri went through and Stuart Dallas then sliced a clearance into the back of the net as Phil Foden shot.

But from there, the game really proved to be a perfect storm as Leeds looked hapless defensively and City looked in no mood to do the Whites any favours.

Bielsa did make a change at half-time with Gelhardt replacing Dan James. James had endured a torrid first-half leading the line.

Ultimately, Gelhardt did not get a chance to add to his tally after opening his Premier League account on Saturday. But he did produce a cameo that left some Leeds fans praising the youngster on social media.

Of course, it was never going to be a game for Gelhardt to really shine. But he produced some very nice moments, trying to dribble out of trouble when surrounded by several City players. Those moments highlighted his bravery and willingness to try and make something happen.

Leeds had a lot more joy going forward once Gelhardt came on. The 19-year-old was able to help drive the visitors forward. And on such a disappointing night, he managed to stake a genuine claim to start against Arsenal this weekend.
