Leeds fans amazed by moment of Monday genius from goalkeeper Illan Meslier, as France 21's lose

France’s Under-21 side were knocked out of the quarter-finals of the Under-21 European Championships on Monday evening. Netherlands came from behind to beat France 2-1 – but Leeds fans were amazed at a moment of brilliance from their goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The group stages took place in March, in order to allow the competition to be completed this summer. France faced Netherlands. Soon-to-be Bayer Munich defender Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring, but Netherlands turned the game on its head.

It was AZ Alkmaar forward Myron Boadu that provided the difference. Equalising soon after the restart, he then broke French hearts with a 93rd-minute winner, the last kick of the game, to hand Netherlands a 2-1 win. Meslier could do very little about either goal he conceded.

It was the ex-Lorient stopper’s first appearance at this level, an Under-21 cap. He had previously earned Under-20 and Under-19 caps, but this is a big step up. Even Didier Deschamps is said to be considering Meslier, but Euro 2020 clearly came too early for the young Leeds ace.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

A senior France call-up will have to wait, but if Deschamps was watching – he will have been impressed by the £5million (YEP) Leeds man. A brief clip has emerged on social media of Meslier in possession. Teasing in a Dutch attacker, Meslier Cruyff turns against the nation in which Johan Cruyff came from.

Leeds fans responded on social media, amazed by their young goalkeeper. It is just another feather in his cap, after a brilliant season in which he became the youngest stopper to reach 10 Premier League clean sheets.
