French outlet But Football Club claimed recently that Newcastle United are leading Leeds in the race to sign Nantes star Moses Simon in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies, despite their narrow defeat to Chelsea at the weekend, have been in brilliant form recently. They’ve picked up 21 points out of a possible 30 over the last 10 games, which makes them the fifth-best side in the country in that period.

Eddie Howe has turned things around and even with the loss against the Blues on Sunday, they are in a comfortable position in the table – far away from the risk of relegation.

It now looks like the focus has turned to the summer transfer window and if the report is true, Leeds United fans will not be happy.

Leeds tried to sign Moses Simon in January, now Newcastle want him

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa explored the possibility of bringing in players that he wanted in the January transfer window. Nantes winger Simon was one of them and the 26-year-old confirmed in an interview that the Whites did make a move for him.

Simon told CKD Media on the 1st of February: “Yes, it is true, my agent told me about some offers among all is Leeds United who came calling with a strong offer and well intention of sealing the deal immediately.

“My club want me to finish the season with FC Nantes and I really want to contribute my own quota to ensure we secure Europa league ticket at the end of the season, we are pushing hard for that.”

Leeds couldn’t wrap up the deal then and that could now open the door for Newcastle to lure him away.

Simon has had a decent season for Nantes in Ligue 1 so far. He has only scored three goals but has provided seven assists, which is not a bad return at all for a wide player.

In a game against Paris Saint-Germain recently, he picked up an assist and starred in a 3-1 victory. Mauricio Pochettino admitted after the game that his star-studded side just couldn’t deal with the Nigerian winger.

“Simon had so much. We couldn’t handle (him) properly,” the PSG boss said, as per Own Goal Nigeria.

Both Leeds and Newcastle United are right to target a player of Simon’s quality but unfortunately for Jesse Marsch’s side, it looks like they blew their opportunity of landing him in January.
