Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (broadcast on 14/3; 22:43) that Joe Gelhardt looks to be a special, special talent and insisted that we will be talking about the Leeds United forward for years to come.

Gelhardt confirmed his spot as the jewel in the Elland Road crown on Sunday. It was his goal in the 94th minute that gave Jesse Marsch’s side a 2-1 victory over Norwich.

The finish to Raphinha’s cross was one of only a handful of touches for Gelhardt after his stoppage-time introduction. But he had already been involved in the move that led to the winner.

It was his flick-on that allowed Raphinha to dance through and go round Tim Krul. In many ways, that header from the 19-year-old was almost as impressive as his composure when the chance came his way.

‘I can assure you’

And the last-gasp winner was almost made even more special by the fact it was Gelhardt who was there to finish the chance. He is already a major fan favourite. He has the ability to get fans out of their seats just by getting ready to come onto the pitch.

Leeds fans have certainly had a glimpse of the potential Gelhardt possesses. But Carragher believes everyone will be raving about the striker in the future – such is his quality.

“He gets the flick on initially, brilliant up against the big defender. This composure he shows, doesn’t panic. Yes, it’s an open goal, you might say it’s easy, but it’s at that time of the game, the ball’s flashing across you,” he told Sky Sports.

“And he’s a special, special talent. He’ll be remembered now for this big goal, but I can assure you, he is a lad we will be talking about a lot in a few years’ time, he really is.”

Gelhardt has already played key role in Leeds’ fight to stay up

Gelhardt has now been directly involved in five goals this season. That is a remarkable return given that he has only made two starts in the Premier League, with a further 11 appearances coming from the bench.

He has scored twice. He set up Daniel James for a crucial third against Burnley. And he has managed to win two penalties.

Gelhardt has been involved in a goal every 92 minutes for Leeds. That is a fantastic effort considering that his game-time has been limited and inconsistent.

Leeds fans would not mind Gelhardt going under the radar a little longer however. They will be desperate to keep him for as long as possible.
