Ian Wright says Martin Odegaard has been the Premier League player of the season
Arsenal legend Ian Wright is very much enjoying his side’s success this season.
Their latest triumph is arguably their best this season.
Winning an away match in the North London Derby is a rare event.
Arsenal hadn’t defeated Tottenham away from home in nearly a decade before Sunday’s victory.
However, an own goal from Hugo Lloris and a fantastic strike by Martin Odegaard earned the Gunners all three points.
A number of Arsenal players are currently playing the best football of their careers.
The likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have gone from strength to strength under Arteta.
Wright has now suggested that Martin Odegaard is his player of the season, especially if he can lead Arsenal to a Premier League title.
The Norwegian has been instrumental in Arsenal’s success, both with his goals and assists, and his leadership.
Odegaard is the player of the season – Wright
Wright was very complimentary about Odegaard, and has certainly lived up to expectations after arriving from Real Madrid.
“He’s looking at the minute like he could be player of the season, especially if Arsenal can finish this off,” Wright said.
“You’re talking about someone with this pedigree, Real Madrid took him on at 15.
“Everybody’s thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t wait to see this guy’, obviously they haven’t got the patience for this development from then to now.
“Or, whether or not he’d be good enough to go into their team or not and do what he’s doing at Arsenal.
“But the main thing is, is that he’s found a way to a place which has accepted him for exactly what he brings to us.
“[He’s] leading by example, with the calibre of player he is, he’s captain already at 24.
“With the pedigree he’s got, I just feel like, if anything happens to Odegaard, [Thomas] Partey or Saka, I’d be worried, but even more so Odegaard.
“At the moment, he’s the player of the season.”
Odegaard has eight league goals and five assists already this season, which is a phenomenal tally.
Jamie O’Hara has suggested that Odegaard looked like Zidane playing against Tottenham at the weekend.
Arteta thought he was ‘incredible’ that day, and will be delighted with his output this season.
There will be plenty of Arsenal fans who will agree with Wright that Odegaard has been the player of the season.
He’ll likely be concentrating on lifting a Premier League trophy as opposed to any personal accolade at the end of the season.
