Lautaro Martinez is Tottenham's top striker target - journalist

Lautaro Martinez is Tottenham’s top striker target this summer amid reports talks are set to begin this week, according to journalist Paul Brown, speaking to Give Me Sport.

Martinez has been in Spurs’ orbit for some time. Of course, it appeared that he may be on his way to North London 12 months ago. Tottenham agreed a £60 million fee for the forward.

Ultimately, the forward opted to stay at Inter Milan. But that not has caused the speculation to go away by any means.

Martinez has already snubbed one half of North London in this window. Reports claimed that he had rejected an offer from Arsenal after they missed out on finishing in the top-four.

Tottenham however, are looking to make a play for the Argentinian imminently, it seems. Spurs are planning to open talks with Martinez this week in the hope of understanding if a deal is possible.

And certainly, there is absolutely no doubt regarding which player they will pursue if they hear the answers they want in talks. Brown suggested that Martinez is the top name on their wishlist.

“I still think Spurs would love to have Lautaro Martinez, who is someone who’s been on their radar for a long time, but he would obviously be massively expensive and doesn’t look like he’s going to move but he would be their first choice,” he told Give Me Sport.

Signing Martinez would be a huge statement in a window where Tottenham are already setting the early pace. The deals for Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma in particular have helped the squad move forward.

Obviously, any forward arriving at Spurs would face a big battle to play regularly.

But Martinez is someone Lionel Messi described as ‘spectacular‘. He has an amazing future ahead, and he knows Antonio Conte extremely well from their time together at San Siro.

Brown notes that Martinez is currently looking unlikely to move. Perhaps Tottenham fans may not need to wait too long to learn whether that is indeed the case.
