Kyle Walker reveals what Mauricio Pochettino did at Tottenham which really upset him

Kyle Walker and Mauricio Pochettino have a very strange relationship.

Walker has named Pochettino as one of his favourite managers in the past, but they did have a falling out at Tottenham that was rather well-publicised.

Speaking on his podcast, Walker has been discussing his spell under Pochettino at Tottenham, and he says the Argentine did something at Spurs that really upset him.

In his final season at Tottenham, Walker was often rotated with Kieran Trippier – a role which he accepted.

However, Walker couldn’t accept the idea of not playing in Spurs’ final game at White Hart Lane.

The defender says that it really hurt him that Pochettino put him on the bench in that final home game back in 2016/17.

Kyle Walker upset with Mauricio Pochettino

Walker spoke about that final season at Spurs.

“Tripps did really well and from that game onwards he played me one week, Tripps the other week, me one week, Tripps the other week,” Walker said.

“You couldn’t get a rhythm. It was so stop-start, I couldn’t get going again. But I’d worked out in my head that if I was to play on/off until the end of the season. The last game at White Hart Lane, it was against Manchester United and I wouldn’t play.

“Lo and behold it got to that game and I was on the bench. He brought me on at 84 minutes and that’s the one thing that really hurt me. Nevermind what he says, that ground meant so much to me. That hurt.”

Mauricio Pochettino had a tough decision to make

Walker had every right to be upset with this decision, but there is an alternative view to take here.

Pochettino had to make sure Spurs won their final game at White Hart Lane, and in order to do that, he had to pick the best team for that match, and he thought Trippier was the man for the job at that time.

Let’s not forget, Trippier would’ve been in the exact same boat if Walker had started.

The reality is when you’re managing such an emotional game, it’s impossible to please everyone in your squad.
