Kyle Bartley labelled reported Leeds target ‘absolutely fantastic’ in 2019

Leeds United were linked with a surprise move at the weekend, with The Sun reporting that the Whites were interested in Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone is apparently facing an uncertain future with West Bromwich Albion. The Sun noted that his contract expires in 18 months.

It was suggested that Leeds, along with Brighton, were monitoring the goalkeeper ahead of a potential January bid.

It will be interesting what comes of the links. Some Leeds fans clearly cannot see a move taking place.

Illan Meslier is Marcelo Bielsa’s current number one. And the supporters cannot imagine that Johnstone would be content with a backup role given that he is a key man for the Baggies.

Johnstone is clearly a talented goalkeeper. He has shone several times since West Brom’s promotion. And they would clearly not want to lose him.

Kyle Bartley has a connection with both clubs. Of course, he currently calls the Hawthorns home. But he also spent a season on loan at Elland Road earlier in his career, captaining the Whites on a number of occasions during that year.

So his previous comments on Johnstone may interest Leeds supporters. The defender argued in 2019 that the 27-year-old could be considered the best stopper in the Championship.

‘One of, if not the best’

“He is absolutely fantastic,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star.

“He’s one of, if not the best keeper in the league.

“He’s got the confidence and we’ve seen some of the saves he’s pulled off. He’s brilliant.”

Of course, the best in the Championship does not necessarily mean a lot to the two clubs anymore. But Johnstone has since managed to transfer his form to the highest level.

He has produced outstanding saves in recent games against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

It would still be a surprise if Leeds pursued a move – particularly during next month’s window. But if Bielsa does decide that he wants Johnstone, Bartley’s comments perhaps help highlight why he would be a good signing.
