Kinnear jokes about Leeds star after Euro 2020 display
Angus Kinnear has joked to BBC Radio Leeds that Leeds United could do without Kalvin Phillips stealing the show once again at Euro 2020 after the midfielder produced a masterclass for England at the weekend.
Phillips was a real surprise package at Wembley. Gareth Southgate picked him alongside Declan Rice.
But rather than feature in the role he has at Elland Road, the 25-year-old was tasked with making much more of an impact further up the field.
And he went on to make that impact. Phillips was superb. And he played a vital role in the decisive goal, going on a nice run and finding Raheem Sterling.
Kinnear was asked about the Whites holding onto their key men this summer.
‘We’ll get some offers’: Kinnear jokes after Kalvin Phillips shine in Euro 2020 opener
And while he insisted that he was confident, he joked that that may change if Phillips’s display is a sign of what is to come.
“All the players, we want them to stay,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “They want to stay. There are discussions being had, but we’re very confident of retaining everybody. We just need Kalvin to keep a little bit of a lid on it in the Euros. Because if he plays like that again, we’ll get some offers.
“It says a lot about Leeds United that Kalvin is proving what all Leeds United fans know about what a great midfielder he is. But we also know that his future is secured at Leeds United. He wants to be here. We want him to be here. I think that’s a measure of where the club’s got to.”
The links with a move away have already started. Reports from Spain this week claimed that Real Madrid plan to monitor Phillips.
But, as Kinnear notes, Leeds are confident of keeping their star player.
And what his form may do is excite potential transfer targets about the prospect of playing for Leeds ahead of next season.
