Unai Emery has confirmed he will be remaining at Villarreal – and Keith Downie has named two managers that Newcastle will now likely go after.
The ex-Arsenal gaffer was strongly linked with Newcastle this week. Reports said he could even be in place against Brighton on Saturday.
The 50-year-old was targeted by the Toon’s new owners, as they felt his style was perfect. A pragmatic manager, but one with excellent countering nous.
However, it appears Emery has rejected the £115k-a-week offer that was on table, as per the Northern Echo, having posted a statement on Instagram.
So, what now for Newcastle? Well, the Echo also reported that Howe would be ‘immediately’ ready to take over on Tyneside – and Downie agrees.
Speaking on Sky Sports News after Emery’s statement (Wednesday, 1.10PM) – Downie stated that the two likeliest to come in are Howe and Martinez.
“There are two outstanding names. One of them is Eddie Howe, he is out of work just now. He would be a fairly easy appointment.
“I think he would take this job in a heartbeat. Another is Roberto Martinez, they would then have the issue of getting him out of his Belgium contract.
“It would not be as expensive or difficult as Emery – those are two options. Jones has worked with Howe at Bournemouth, and Martinez at Belgium.”

Downie on Newcastle: Howe or Martinez, after Emery blow?
Ultimately, the two are pretty similar – but different from Emery. They both like to play possession-based, attractive, attacking football.
It is different to the defensive style Emery uses, which is likened to that of Rafa Benitez. Which would be best for Newcastle, Howe or Martinez?
Well, they are pretty similar. Martinez has managed Everton, Wigan and Swansea in the Premier League – while Howe has coached Bournemouth.
Martinez has impressed with bigger egos at national team level. But that is a world apart from Newcastle. Perhaps, the Spaniard edges it, just.
