Keith Downie has told Sky Sports News (Monday, 9:05AM) that Newcastle sources have informed him that the club are looking to get a deal done for Kieran Trippier this week. The new owners are keen to sign Trippier “swiftly”.

The ex-Manchester City and Tottenham man has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Atleti – and he has has made no secret of his desire to return to England. CalcioMercato report a four-year deal is on the table for Trippier.
Sky Sports reporter Downie gave an update on Monday morning, stating that he has spoken to club sources about a deal for Trippier. He says that it is “his understanding” that a move could go through in the next few days.

“Newcastle have lodged a bid. Newcastle have reached that asking price. Having spoken to sources at the club, it is my understanding that the club want to get a deal done swiftly – they want to get him here this week,” Downie said.
Downie on Trippier: Newcastle fans can begin to get excited this month
It is a brilliant signing, if it does get done. The England and Atletico defender is a player that is getting better and better, perhaps the influence of Diego Simeone aiding his career. He waved goodbye on Sunday, after a 2-0 win.
Atletico are keen to keep him. Simeone spoke after Sunday’s victory over Rayo Vallecano – stating that you cannot retain a player that wants to go, suggesting Atletico want to keep him. Newcastle are pulling off a major coup.
