'One of the best in England': Leeds United star lauded by Elland Road favourite
Barry Douglas has praised his former Leeds teammate Kalvin Phillips, ahead of England’s crucial clash with Scotland this evening.
Douglas has left Leeds this summer after an enjoyable spell at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa. The Scot had initially been a key figure for the Whites, before being pushed out and spending last season on loan with Blackburn Rovers.
The 31-year-old, though, has no grudge against his former team. He was well-liked by players and fans alike.
And Douglas, speaking to Talksport yesterday, found time to single out Kalvin Phillips for praise, ahead of the England v Scotland game tonight.
“Kalvin has unbelievable attributes and the different managers are utilising him in different ways because he’s arguably the best at what he does at Leeds,” Douglas commented.
“He’s one of the best in England, but then he’s excelled in this advanced role and is more involved in attacking phases. He’s been unbelievable for the two or three years I was there, so it’s no surprise to see him doing it on the international stage as well.”
Douglas is not the first person to sing Phillips’ praises. The England man was Man of the Match against Croatia, while Chris Sutton has previously been impressed by the Leeds star.
Phillips is expected to get the nod again tonight in midfield. With Jordan Henderson still building fitness, the Leeds man has seized his chance.
Kavlin Phillips being praised is nothing new, he’s a star now
People doubted Phillips when Leeds got promoted but boy, have they been shown up now.
The Leeds man is simply brilliant. His performance against Croatia was that of a man who is stepping up to the plate and thoroughly enjoying the challenge of being an England starter.
For Leeds, it’s just great for them to see. They have enjoyed a great rise under Bielsa. And Phillips’ brilliance only does them proud.
