Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that Kalvin Phillips has had an amazing debut season in the Premier League as he praised the Leeds United star’s reading of the game.

Phillips is one of several players within Marcelo Bielsa’s side who has seemingly found adapting to life in the top flight fairly simple.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding for much of the campaign as Leeds secured a top-half finish.

He made his international debut at the start of the season. And his performances throughout the year mean that there was absolutely no surprise to see him included in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad ahead of Euro 2020.

And following the announcement, Sutton suggested that Phillips more than deserves the nod.

“What a debut season he’s had in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa,” he told the Daily Mail. “If England’s full backs fly forward, Phillips is great at knowing when and where to provide cover.”

If Phillips is fit, it would be a huge shock if he did not make the 26-man final squad.

Unfortunately, there is a question mark over his fitness. He suffered a nasty-looking shoulder injury as he made one final full-blooded challenge to round off the Premier League season.

But if he is ready, he surely has to be involved this summer.

It is an amazing story with Phillips struggling to really find his way at Leeds before Bielsa’s arrival.

He had shown a lot of potential, scoring several goals in the final year before Bielsa came in.

But few could have foreseen what Bielsa would turn Phillips into.
