'Just seen him': Journalist shares what Illan Meslier told him after Leeds vs Aston Villa clash
Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier put in an impressive pre-season performance against Aston Villa yesterday, and he is feeling very sharp this pre-season Leeds Live report.
The 22-year-old only cost Leeds a reported £5 million (Yorkshire Evening Post) last summer after he made the switch from French outfit FC Lorient.
After only making 10 appearances in the Championship while on loan at the Yorkshire club during the 2019-20 season, the Frenchman has been a mainstay in the Leeds side in the Premier League.
And he’s put in some impressive performances between the sticks, despite his relatively young age for a goalkeeper.
During Leeds’ pre-season game against Villa yesterday, Meslier made some impressive saves – including a double penalty save in the first-half.
In a Leeds Live Facebook live chat about the game, journalist William Jackson claimed to have seen Meslier and the young goalkeeper apparently told him he was feeling good.
He said: “I’ve just seen Meslier downstairs and he says he’s feeling sharp and he looks it on the pitch.”
Meslier also made an eye-catching save to deny Ollie Watkins and the journalist said the Villa striker was left wondering how he didn’t score.
During the Facebook live chat, he said: “I don’t think anyone could quite believe it in the crowd and the same with Watkins stop when he just tipped it over the bar. I caught a moment when Watkins was watching the big screen and he was just stood there with his hands on his hips and shaking his head, thinking how on earth has that not gone in!”
Jesse Marsch’s side did go on to lose the game 1-0 but Meslier’s performance will be a huge positive for Leeds.
The Whites goalkeeper has been ever-present between the sticks at Elland Road. He played in every single Premier League game last season and Marsch will be hoping he carries this form into the season.
The young stopper has been linked with a move away from the club over the last week, with reports suggesting that OGC Nice are monitoring the player.
But after a pre-season display like yesterday, it would be hard to see Marsch allowing Meslier to leave the club.
And the news that he is feeling so sharp can only bode well for Marsch’s side, as the start of the Premier League season draws closer.
