Jurgen Klinsmann shares what he really thinks about Darwin Nunez and whether he can succeed at Liverpool

Darwin Nunez led the line for Liverpool as they secured a 2-0 win against Bologna in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah set Liverpool on their way to a routine win, but Nunez once again flattered to deceive as he failed to get his name on the scoresheet.

Starting in attack alongside Salah and Luis Diaz, the 25-year-old was left scratching his head after being flagged offside a handful of times and was guilty of making poor decisions in the final third.

Nunez has scored just once this season under Arne Slot and his position at the club has come under increased scrutiny.

However, Jurgen Klinsmann believes the former Benfica striker has all the tools to be the leading man for Liverpool despite his current struggles.

While the German great believes Nunez hasn’t been consistent enough for Liverpool, he feels the raw tools are there for him to come good in the future.

“I absolutely believe he has the talent and the qualities to play at the highest level in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League,” said Klinsmann on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.

“It’s just a question of consistency – he hasn’t figured it out yet. He gives you brilliant games and then you don’t see him for a couple of weeks.

“I hope he can work that out down the road but I still believe he’s got everything in order to be a top-class striker.”

Nunez has divided opinion so far

The Uruguayan striker has shown flashes of brilliance since joining the club in 2022, but the fact of the matter is that he hasn’t managed to nail down a starting spot after two seasons, which is a worrying sign, to say the least.

Nunez tends to be a bit over-eager at times with his forward runs, leading to him being flagged more often than anyone else at the club.

Jurgen Klopp worked with him for two seasons and didn’t have too much success in making him a consistent match-winner. If Slot also fails to get the best out of him in the current campaign, Liverpool may have to bite the bullet and look to move him on next summer.
