Journalist suggests 'amazing' Tottenham player isn't happy and could look to leave in January
Ben Jacobs has expressed concern over Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of keeping Lucas Moura in the upcoming transfer window.
The CBS journalist, speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel, said the Lilywhites want to keep Moura.
Indeed, Tottenham apparently want to offer him a contract extension to keep him at N17 past 2024.
However, Jacobs feels Tottenham will struggle to do so, because “the player perspective is completely different”.
Moura has struggled for game time this season, clocking up just 266 minutes of competitive minutes.
The 30-year-old has made eight Premier League outings, all off the bench, and three Champions League appearances this term.
Moura was of course on the sidelines with a tendon issue earlier this season, so that has contributed to his lack of game time too.
‘He is struggling a lot’
Indeed, Antonio Conte continues to worry over his player’s fitness situation.
“About Lucas Moura, we didn’t have him from the start of the season. And we are continuing to not have him,” he told football.london.
“He has this problem, he is struggling a lot to find a solution.
“For sure it’s a difficult situation. Because I have a good player in my squad, but he’s never available. It’s like you don’t have him.
“It’s a pity because I repeat: we are talking about a good player, a good guy, but he is struggling a lot to solve this problem.
“I don’t know, I don’t know what in the future happens about him.”
‘Can still contribute’
Nonetheless, Jacobs speculates that the Brazilian is not happy with his role, and if a good offer comes his way, he could look to leave.
“I think that (a contract extension) is the plan with Moura,” he said.
“Tottenham would prefer to extend it but it’s all about the player and does he have that desire, especially as Spurs make more signings to stay?
“The Tottenham reference is an extension, but the player perspective is completely different. He’s been limited to a support role this season.
“Tottenham really don’t want to let that level of experience and what he could offer in squad management go.
“But his form hasn’t been good in limited appearances, I can’t think of much of a contribution in terms of Moura.
“The reason Tottenham would like to extend is because it keeps hold of somebody they know can still contribute and still has experience.
“But if the right offer came in it’s going to be very difficult for them to keep hold of him at the minute, because I just don’t think Moura is happy.”
Moura might struggle to find suitors at this moment in time – TBR View
Conte seems to be a big fan of Moura, having played him a fair bit last season.
Sadly, the ‘amazing‘ forward has struggled with injury this term. And Conte hasn’t been able to play him as much as either player and manager would like.
If Moura did want to leave in January, you have to wonder whether any club would actively look to sign him while he’s got this tendon issue.
The likelihood is any suitors would want assurances that this issue will go away and stay away.
