Journalist says Tottenham still lurking in Youri Tielemans race

Alex Crook has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham Hotspur are still lurking in the background in the race to sign Youri Tielemans, but Arsenal still lead the charge for the Belgian.

Tielemans may well be one player to keep an eye on after the international break. For some time, it has appeared that the Leicester City star is destined to move to the Emirates.

Reports claimed that Arsenal were growing confident of signing Tielemans in a £40 million deal. That was, however, before they missed out on making the Champions League next season.

It does appear that Arsenal remain in the driving seat to sign Tielemans. However, he does have other admirers.

Crook suggested that Mikel Arteta’s men continue to be on pole position. But he did claim that Tottenham are yet to take the 25-year-old off their radar.

“I think Tottenham are lurking in the background as well, and I think even Leicester are willing to offer him a new contract to keep him there. So, maybe Arsenal isn’t as attractive a proposition as it was, but he was definitely in the building in January, his agent was anyway, holding talks,” he told Give Me Sport.

“I would still make them the frontrunners, but their position has definitely been weakened by the fact that they’re not in the Champions League.”

Of course, Tottenham are closing in on their first midfield signing of the window. Yves Bissouma is set to undergo a medical this week after a £25 million fee was agreed with Brighton.

That deal will make it much harder to imagine Tielemans ending up in Antonio Conte’s squad next year. They are different midfielders. But Spurs’ options in the middle of the park will be stacked.

However, Tottenham are also threatening to push the boat out this summer. They are closing in on signing number three. And Tielemans is heading into the final year of his contract at the King Power Stadium.

So they may sense that there is an opportunity to do a smart piece of business. Tielemans has the potential to be an ‘incredible‘ player.

And Arsenal would surely be wise to try and conclude a deal at the earliest opportunity.
