Everton drew 2-2 with Liverpool in the Merseyside derby yesterday, after a stunning header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw Everton fight back for a share of the spoils.
Lucas Digne swung in a delightful cross but the Everton striker still had lots to do to turn the opportunity into a goal.
He leapt into the air and headed home a well-placed goal to secure the draw.
It was a goal that had a certain former Premier League striker very excited.
Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s leading goalscorer of all time was left stunned by the goal, one he would have been proud to have scored himself.
“Wow,” Shearer stated on Match of the Day (17/10/20). “Put it in the box he’s going to get on the end of it, get off it (Andrew) Robertson, I’m going to get in front of the defender. Get up first, nobody is going to stop him.
“To get the direction, to get the power, the accuracy, all of that, absolutely magnificent. What a start. England cap, England goal, top-scorer in the Premier League. Wow. Impressive.”
It takes a lot to get Shearer saying ‘wow’ on two occasions so this goal must have really caught his eye.
Calvert-Lewin has certainly been in fine form this season, with Carlo Ancelotti getting the best out of the hard-working star.
It has led to goals galore for Everton and a first strike for the England senior team.
Everton fans will just hope DCL has Shearer purring throughout the season.
