Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that he would be surprised if Newcastle United did not sign Matt Targett from Aston Villa permanently regardless of what league they find themselves in next year.
Targett was one of five players to join the Magpies during the January transfer window. He arrived following Villa’s decision to sign Lucas Digne from Everton earlier in the month.

He has, so far, made two appearances for Eddie Howe’s side. Targett missed the clash with his parent club in between the games with Everton and West Ham.
He has helped Newcastle take themselves out of the relegation zone. And it does appear that they are now able to look up the table, rather than down. But clearly, they are not out of the woods just yet.

They may have a plan in place in case they do fall into the Championship. But interestingly, Jones has suggested that signing Targett is likely to be on the Newcastle wishlist whichever division they find themselves in next year.
“The ambition is there, the money is there, and the squad that’s going to be built over the next 12 months will be impressive, no matter which league they’re in,” he told Give Me Sport.
“So, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up joining [permanently].”
Targett a smart signing for Newcastle as Magpies hope to enjoy stunning summer
If Newcastle stay up, they will be the team to look out for this summer. Certainly, their fans will be hopeful of some amazing pieces of business.
Those marquee targets who were perhaps reluctant to sign in January will surely be a lot happier to make the move with the slate wiped clean at the end of the season.
But signing Targett permanently would be a very solid piece of business. His time at Villa ended abruptly. But he has proved during his time with the Villans that he is a decent Premier League player.
He was their Players’ Player of the Year last season. And Howe described him as a ‘fantastic‘ player.
So keeping Targett permanently will be a smart move from Newcastle should they indeed get a deal done.
