£100m man sends three-word message to 'fantastic' Newcastle player after deadline day move
Aston Villa defender Matt Targett completed his loan move to Newcastle United on transfer deadline day.
The 26-year-old was a regular at Villa Park since he joined them from Southampton in 2019. He looked irreplaceable at one point, but Steven Gerrard decided to bring in Lucas Digne from Everton, and the Frenchman immediately became the number one at the club,
That made things difficult for Targett, who is at the age where he needs to play every week. That wasn’t going to happen at Villa after Digne’s arrival, which is why he decided to consider his options.
Up stepped Newcastle United, who were looking for a left-back since the start of the window, and they got the job done fairly quickly.
Grealish sends Instagram message to Matt Targett after his Newcastle move
Before Digne moved to Villa Park, Targett had played 19 times in all competitions. He registered a goal and an assist in that period as well, which isn’t bad considering how poor Aston Villa were before Gerrard arrived.
Targett took to Instagram to send a message to Newcastle United fans right after his move was announced.
He wrote: “So proud to have signed for @nufc until the end of the season. Can’t wait to get started! I’m ready to give my all to this club as we head into a very important few months. Looking forward to seeing you all at St James’ Park.”
His former teammate Jack Grealish, who left Villa to join Manchester City for £100 million last summer, replied to Targett’s post with a message that read: “Good luck brother!”

Targett is a fantastic signing for Newcastle ahead of the business end of the season.
The former Southampton man has a ton of experience in the Premier League under his belt. He is excellent in attack and not too bad defensively either. He fills a very important void in the Magpies’ squad and Eddie Howe is absolutely delighted to have him.
Speaking about Targett following his arrival, the Newcastle boss told the club’s official website: “We have gone into this transfer window with a plan to add strong competition in specific areas of the team and Matt will be a fantastic option for us on the left.
“He has important Premier League experience and know-how at this level, so I’m really pleased we’ve been able to add him to the squad.”
