'Definitely': Journalist says Chelsea are ready to beat Newcastle in race to sign 'really dangerous' £45m man
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport that Chelsea could consider a move to sign Brentford striker, Ivan Toney.
Toney has been linked with a number of teams, including Newcastle United. His fine form for the Bees saw him come close to landing a spot in England’s World Cup plans. However, some off-field issues have blighted his push and Gareth Southgate has left him at home.
“I think Chelsea long-term will be looking to bring in a number nine, probably this summer. I don’t think Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is the long-term answer due to his form and his age probably,” O’Rourke said.
“So, I think Chelsea will be looking at him [Toney]. If you’re looking at Premier League strikers and ones that are probably more gettable than others, Ivan Toney definitely comes into the reckoning.”
Chelsea have been looking for a new number nine for some time. A few big signings, including Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, have all failed to produce. Indeed, Graham Potter has even labelled Toney as ‘really dangerous’ previously.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are building nicely under Eddie Howe. A move for Toney at some point could very much improve the squad further.
TBR’s View: Toney a man in demand for a reason
A lot could depend on any ban that comes his way when it comes to Ivan Toney. He is clearly ready to step up to a club challenging in Europe. But the question marks hang over.
Purely on footballing ability, you can see why Chelsea fancy him. Likewise, you can see why Newcastle might like him as well.
However, it’s going to cost big money. Toney is key to Brentford and any deal is likely to involve a mammoth fee. Of course, Chelsea would probably pay it, with Todd Boehly keen to make a splash.
