Journalist: Antonio Conte wanted to sign Tottenham star while at Chelsea in 2017, instead of £70m signing

Mirror journalist Darren Lewis has told the Kelly & Wrighty Show that Antonio Conte told him he wanted Tottenham’s Harry Kane at Chelsea.

Conte and Kane have finally crossed paths after the Italian gaffer agreed to join Tottenham. He won his first game in charge, a 3-2 win over Vitesse.

Kane lasted the entire 90 minutes, proving incredibly effective without scoring. He got an assist for Lucas Moura, he ran through and scored.

Back in July 2017, Conte was at the Asia Trophy as Chelsea gaffer – having just won the 2016-17 Premier League title. The Blues signed Alvaro Morata.

Costing a fee of £70million (Goal), Morata struggled at Chelsea. Speaking to Lewis at the Asia Trophy, the journalist shared what he said about Kane.

“I was on the Asia tour [2017] after they won the title. They bought Morata. He said to a little group of us, he would rather have had Kane,” Lewis said.

“He left Chelsea because they bought players he did not want. Give him what he wants, and he will be a success – just look at Inter Milan.”

Lewis on Kane to Chelsea: Now, Conte gets his man at Tottenham

Clearly, Conte is an admirer of Kane. For Conte to have wanted to sign the England skipper four years ago for Chelsea, says everything.

Kane is struggling for form right now, though many Spurs fans were impressed with the striker on Thursday – his best performance so far.

He was right to want Kane over Morata, who has never really found a home. At Euro 2020, he was pretty much a laughing stock for Spain.

Now at Juventus, he is unlikely to earn a permanent move from Atletico – while on loan. Conte now gets Kane, but he has to turn his form around.
