Josh Acheampong’s latest Chelsea display causes Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer to say the exact same thing

Owing to Chelsea’s injury woes at the back, Enzo Maresca turned to 19-year-old Josh Acheampong against Liverpool at the weekend.

Predominantly a right-back in his youth career, Josh Acheampong played at right centre-back alongside Benoit Badiashile against Liverpool.

And despite the pair’s good performances, Acheampong and Badiashile are far from Maresca’s strongest duo.

Of course, both centre-backs did unfortunately have to leave the pitch early themselves through injury at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

But during his 68 minutes in the thick of the action, Acheampong certainly left a lasting impression for Chelsea

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer left impressed with Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong

That being said, all of Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were left purring over Acheampong’s performance against Liverpool.

Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’, the trio all loved what they saw from the youngster before he had to leave the pitch through injury.

Starting the chat, Lineker said: “I’ll tell you who I like, Acheampong.”

Richards replied: “Oh, yes.”

Shearer added: “Yeah, he did well, didn’t he?”

Lineker: “It was a shame he went off injured in the end, but I mean, very assured, first time I’ve watched him in a big game and I thought, we like that.”

Shearer: “Yeah, when you consider the injuries, particularly defensively that Chelsea had, for him to come in and step up like he did. I was impressed with him. He had a good game.

Richards: “I was impressed, but I put him in my fantasy that he didn’t play for a few games. So I’m holding a grudge against him, but he’s back in the team now.”

Josh Acheampong injury update

Fortunately for Chelsea, it seems as if Acheampong will be ready to feature after the international break.

Chelsea are missing Cole Palmer in attack right now, and Maresca won’t want to be missing any further talent ahead of some winnable fixtures to come.

In terms of Acheampong’s issue, Chelsea goalkeeping coach Willy Caballero confirmed that there was good news following Saturday’s victory over Liverpool.

Speaking in place of Maresca, Caballero said: “The two central defenders, it was just prevention.

“They made a great effort today, but just prevention. We spoke with them already and they said that they are okay, so [it is] good for us.”

A promising verdict for Chelsea, who were already without Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo at the back.
