Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has labelled Tanguy Ndombele’s recent form amazing, and insisted that he has the potential to be phenomenal, in comments reported by Football London.
Ndombele went into the season seemingly facing an uncertain future. The Guardian was one of the publications to link the midfielder with a move away during the summer window.
However, he has gone on to play an important role for Spurs in the opening stages of the season. And he has vindicated Mourinho’s faith with some superb performances.
And following his outstanding display against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday – which was lauded by the supporters – Mourinho suggested that Ndombele is definitely on the right track.
“He is playing amazing. He is playing so, so well. You can feel the happiness and a happy player his performance goes in the right direction,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“Physically he can be better, he has to be better, he will be better, but in this moment if you compare this Tanguy with the Tanguy of last season, the Tanguy of this pre-season – a pre-season he did not have much of because of his injury and other problems – there is no point in comparing because they are so different.
“Yesterday I had a big hug with him, even before the penalties, even before the victory, just for the feeling of what he gave for the 90 minutes. I am very happy with Tanguy. But he can be better because he can be really phenomenal.”
TBR View: Ndombele improvement sends message to teammates
It is an incredibly exciting sign that Mourinho is backing Ndombele to get even better. Spurs fans have already had a number of glimpses of how good he could be.
And after concerns about his fitness, it must be noted that he has got through 90 minutes twice in less than one week. He also came off the bench against Newcastle at the weekend.
It has been a fantastic fightback from the Frenchman. And Mourinho may be hoping that Ndombele acts as an example for any teammates who are enduring a difficult time.
