As things stand, Newcastle will have to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final without Anthony Gordon.
The England international – who was named Player of the Season at Newcastle last term – picked up a straight red card on Sunday for lashing out at Brighton No.29 Jan Paul van Hecke, shoving the Dutchman in the head.
Eddie Howe has said that Newcastle will appeal the decision if they feel they have a chance of winning – and an incident involving Joelinton back in August could seriously help the Magpies with their case.
FA verdict on Joelinton vs Neto will make Anthony Gordon appeal an interesting case
You may recall the Brazilian dragging Neto down to the turf by his neck during a Premier League clash between Newcastle and Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium back in August, which ended 1-1.

VAR opted not to send Joelinton, who Jamie Carragher admires, off for this offence – nor did the Football Association (FA) feel it necessary to ban the South American retrospectively.
Therefore, given the similarities between this and what Gordon, who also missed the 2023 Carabao Cup final, did to van Hecke, Newcastle may well have a solid argument to take to the FA if they use this incident as an example.
The games Anthony Gordon will miss for Newcastle if ban is upheld
If the FA uphold Taylor’s decision, and Gordon is sidelined for three games, the Newcastle No.10 will miss two important Premier League games in the fight for UEFA Champions League qualification, as well as the Carabao Cup final.
The 24-year-old would need to sit out of the trip to West Ham on Monday 10th March, as well as the visit of Brentford on Wednesday 2nd April.
Given the fact Gordon has scored nine goals and provided six assists in 34 appearances for Newcastle so far this season, he will obviously be a huge loss for Howe – although the incident involving Joelinton could well see his ban rescinded, in our view at least.
