Anthony Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup final between Newcastle and Liverpool after a foolish red card on Sunday.

The England international bizarrely pushed Jan Paul van Hecke in the face during the FA Cup Round of 16 clash between Newcastle and Brighton on Sunday, which Anthony Taylor deemed worthy of a straight red card.

Despite Tariq Lamptey also being dismissed just eight minutes later in the 91st minute, the Magpies went on to lose 2-1 after a 114th minute winner from Danny Welbeck.

With Anthony Gordon now consequently sidelined for the Carabao Cup final, his comments about missing the 2023 final against Manchester United will make painful reading for Newcastle fans.

Speaking to NUFC TV back in January, the Newcastle No.10 said: “I was devastated last time. I played in a stupid cup game just before I came (to Newcastle).

“I had a broken hand, I just remember thinking, why did I play in that game? I travelled down (to Wembley). Unfortunately we lost, but what an experience.

“Hopefully I get to be part of it this time but that’s up to us. We’ve got a good advantage but we’re facing a top team (Arsenal) so it could change really quickly. It’s totally in our hands now.”

Due to his own ill-discipline, Gordon, who Roy Keane defended, will now have to watch his teammates play a second Carabao Cup final in the space of two years from the sidelines.

What Eddie Howe said about Newcastle appealing the red card

Of course, Newcastle have the right to appeal Gordon’s red card, which, if successful, would make him available for the Carabao Cup final.

Discussing that topic, Eddie Howe said: “Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that (an appeal) we will do without hesitation.

“I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it, but knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”
