Leeds apparently wanted ‘sensational’ £45m Premier League star and Marsch will now be watching on with envy – TBR View

There can’t be many players in recent memory who have arrived at a club like Luis Diaz has at Liverpool and made such a huge impression instantly.

Diaz has come out of the blocks like a man possessed since signing. The Reds snapped him up ahead of Tottenham on deadline day and right away, it’s looked an absolute genius move from Klopp and Edwards. Indeed, even Gary Neville has been impressed, with the Sky commentator calling Diaz ‘absolutely sensational’ for his impact already.

However, while we all know of Tottenham’s interest in Diaz, Goal issued a report yesterday in which former Liverpool man Stewart Downing claimed Leeds were actually interested in Diaz. As we know, Liverpool paid £45m to get the deal done eventually.

And you have to say, if that was the case and they could have been in with a sniff of a deal, then Jesse Marsch will be looking on at Liverpool with serious envy right now.

Luis Diaz To Leeds Would Have Been Quite Something

Indeed, the sheer thought of having Diaz and Raphinha on opposite wings is enough to frighten the life out of any Premier League defence. In a way, it’s probably as close to a Salah and Mane type situation as a club could hope to get.

We know from current rumours that Raphinha could be on his way out of Leeds. But if they’d managed to get a deal for Diaz over the line, it might have been enough to convince the Brazilian that his future was definitely at Elland Road.

Certainly, Jesse Marsch will be looking on at Liverpool and thinking what might have been. Diaz possesses everything that a current Leeds player is all about. Energy, fight, a will to win, pace, and of course, that brilliant quality to finish or create when it matters.

The good news for Leeds, of course, is that they were at least interested. That suggests Victor Orta and co are looking in the right places. To their credit, they signed Raphinha for £17m, so at least they got one brilliant winger.

However, after Downing’s comments, thoughts of a Diaz and Raphinha 1-2 will have to be consigned to the fantasy books for Leeds fans and Jesse Marsch.
