Jermaine Jenas hails display from ‘brilliant’ £26m-rated star, amid links with Tottenham and Newcastle

Jermaine Jenas hailed the performance last night of Netherlands forward Wout Weghorst, who incidentally is reportedly wanted by two of his former clubs in Tottenham and Newcastle United.

Weghorst started in Thursday night’s 2-0 win for the Dutch over Austria. It’s a result that means they’ve qualified for the knockouts rounds of Euro 2020 with a game to spare in their group.

The 28-year-old forward spearheaded the attack effectively, something he does for club side Wolfsburg.

He’s scored in his nation’s Euro 2020 opener in a win over Ukraine, but last night showed more of his all-round game by linking play.

According to the Athletic, German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg could sell Weghorst this summer if their £26million valuation is met.

Premier League trio Spurs, Newcastle and West Ham are the clubs keen on his signature.

Pundit Jenas was complimentary of the centre-forward’s latest performance at the Euros:

“He’s a useful player for them with the way they play and the way they like to knock it around. And just to have that other option to play into his chest and miss that press. There is a huge gap to drop balls into, and he was brilliant at that today,” Jenas said on BBC One (9:20pm, 17 June).

Weghorst should excite Tottenham and Newcastle fans

Spurs need competition in attack for Harry Kane. Likewise, Newcastle need to sign someone to compete with frontman Callum Wilson.

As well as a promising start to Euro 2020, Weghorst has just enjoyed a fine campaign at club level.

He scored 25 goals in 41 games across all competitions for Wolfsburg. In addition, he created nine assists.

The 6ft 6in forward played a major role in firing Wolfsburg to Champions League qualification, so his transfer price looks a reasonable one.

His reputation is only rising as the tournament goes on.
