Jermain Defoe says £11m player used to be so bad in Tottenham training

Jermain Defoe was lucky enough to play with some absolutely incredible players at Tottenham Hotspur.

Indeed, Defoe worked with the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart at Tottenham, while he’s also hailed some lesser-known names in the past.

Defoe was a big fan of Wilson Palacios, while he said Aaron Lennon was better than Heung-Min Son at one point.

Now, speaking to Open Goal, Defoe has been discussing another of his former Tottenham teammates, Dimitar Berbatov.

Defoe has previously praised Berbatov, but, on this occasion, the pundit gave a damning view of the Bulgarian and how poor he was in training for Spurs.

According to Defoe, both Berbatov and Pascal Chimbonda simply wouldn’t try in training for Tottenham.

Dimitar Berbatov was poor in Tottenham training

Defoe spoke about Berbatov and what he was like in training.

Berbatov had a reputation for being very nonchalant on the pitch, and according to Defoe, the £11m man was very similar in training for Spurs.

“Would he try in training?” Defoe was asked about Berbatov.

“No, him and Pascal Chimbonda, they were the worst trainers ever, Berba and Chimbonda, those two were the worst trainers, they would just chill, they’d just chill,” Defoe said.

Top players who were poor in training

Dimitar Berbatov wasn’t good in training for Tottenham, but certain players don’t have to train hard to become world class.

Indeed, there are some top players from over the years who never worked hard in training and have become incredible players.

Eden Hazard was known as a lazy trainer at Chelsea, but he became one of the Premier League’s best players.

Carlos Tevez wasn’t a hard trainer at Manchester United, and he became a Golden Boot winner – ironically sharing the award with Dimitar Berbatov.

Meanwhile, Dele Alli was labelled a lazy trainer by Jose Mourinho, and he was one of the game’s best players at one point.

For most players, you have to work hard to reach the top, but, for others, natural talent is simply enough.
