Jenas tears into Davinson Sánchez after Tottenham defeat to Wolves

Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day 2 that he thought that Davinson Sanchez was shocking on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur were beaten at home by Wolves.

Antonio Conte’s men saw their top-four hopes in the Premier League dealt another blow. Early goals from Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker decided the game inside the first 20 minutes.

There were a number of calamitous mistakes from the Spurs defence. Hugo Lloris could have done better for the first. Meanwhile, Ben Davies gave the ball away incredibly cheaply in the build-up to the visitors’ second.

Sanchez did not cost Tottenham a goal. But he very nearly did, particularly with one error during the second-half when he took a terrible touch on the edge of his own box. Thankfully, the chance that fell to Jimenez was not taken.

Certainly, no Tottenham defender can be particularly pleased with their showing against Wolves. But Jenas picked out the Colombian as seemingly being the worst of the bunch in the bruising loss.

“Davinson Sanchez today was shocking, he really was. I think body language is really important defensively. You need leaders, you need people talking,” he told Match of the Day 2.

“He’s got no idea there if a run is made there, he’s on his shoulder. The lack of communication between Doherty and Sanchez, so he just hoofs it out. It’s so laid back.

“The panic that they have. You have Hugo Lloris saying calm down and Sanchez not listening, just launching it in the air.”

Sanchez struggling to repay Conte faith after back-to-back Tottenham defeats

It was recently suggested that Conte is a big fan of Sanchez. That may have come as a surprise to some given that the 25-year-old has not always had the best spell in North London.

But the Italian’s faith in the centre-back is reflected in the fact that Sanchez has almost been an ever-present in the league for Tottenham since Conte was appointed.

In fact, the only league game he has played no part in was the draw with Everton in Conte’s first match in charge.

Conte admitted after Sunday that he may be making a mistake not using Joe Rodon more. So it will be very interesting to see whether Sanchez keeps his place when Tottenham line up to face Manchester City.

For some, it would be a gamble to promote Rodon now. For others, the bigger gamble may be sticking by Sanchez.
