Pundit tears into Lloris after mistake in Tottenham loss vs Wolves

Matthew Upson has expressed his disbelief at the decision Hugo Lloris made to parry the ball into the path of Raul Jimenez for Wolves’ opening goal in their win at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Spurs have suffered their fifth defeat in their last eight games in all competitions. Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker scored the two goals inside the first 20 minutes. And Tottenham were unable to recover.

Few Spurs players managed to give a good account of themselves in the loss. But certainly, Antonio Conte’s men did not help themselves with some huge mistakes, particularly in defence.

One of those to make a costly error was Lloris. The Frenchman was tested by a long-range effort from Ruben Neves before the opening goal.

His save was Neves was smart. However, his reaction to Dendoncker’s subsequent attempt was extremely poor. He was under little pressure. And yet, with Cristian Romero back alongside him on the goalline, he decided to palm the ball back into the path of Jimenez.

The Mexico international was more than happy to take full advantage of the opportunity, breaking the deadlock. Unsurprisingly, Upson was extremely critical of the Tottenham captain.

“It’s parried by Lloris, but that there, I have no clue what he’s thinking there,” he said. “He’s just flapped at the ball, trying to punch it away.”

Lloris entitled to off day after superb 12 months for Tottenham

It is a concern that Tottenham have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight games. Pierluigi Gollini has also been involved in that time. And neither goalkeeper can take all of the blame for the goals that they have conceded.

Lloris has, in the main, been outstanding over the last 12 months. He was certainly one of the few positives during the second-half of last season. And he has kept Spurs in a number of games this term.

If anyone can be forgiven for an error therefore, it is surely Lloris. It was an incredibly disappointing day for Lloris and Tottenham. But his form this season suggests that he will bounce back before too long.
