Aston Villa’s transfer business when they were first promoted to the Premier League was dodgy to say the least.
The Villans spent over £100m that first summer under Dean Smith only to almost be relegated, and many of the arrivals in that window had to be categorised as flops.
However, that window as a blip in what has been a fantastic era of recruitment at Villa Park.
The likes of Moussa Diaby, Lucas Digne and Emi Martinez have been incredible signings in recent years, but perhaps the best bargain in this current squad was John McGinn.
Indeed, the Scot signed for Villa for just £2.7m back in 2018, and now, he’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Jeff Stelling has been discussing the signing of McGinn all those years ago, and he says that this may have been one of the all-time bargains.

McGinn an all-time bargain
Stelling shared his verdict on the midfielder.
“People like Ezri Konsa, he has improved beyond all recognition this season, Ollie Watkins as well, even at his age, John McGinn having one of the best seasons of his life. He cost £2.7m something like that, you see what teams are getting these days for £80m, it’s one of the all-time bargains,” Stelling said.
Up there with the best
Stelling isn’t wrong, this signing is up there with the best in footballing history.
Not only did McGinn play a huge part in getting Villa promoted initially, he’s improved year-on-year in the Premier League, and now, he could realistically captain the club to a Premier League title.
There have been some incredible bargains in the history of English football, but McGinn has to be considered one of the best.
The Scot may well be the best signing in Villa’s history, and that’s huge praise.
