Jay Bothroyd claims 22-year-old Arsenal player has actually been really inconsistent this season

Jay Bothroyd claims Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli has been inconsistent this season.

Gabriel Martinelli hasn’t quite managed to replicate the form he produced last season for Arsenal this time around.

The Brazilian has had a hand in seven goals in 23 appearances in the Premier League this term. It would take a quite dazzling run of form for him to best the 20 goal involvements he managed last time out.

There have been more encouraging signs in recent weeks as Martinelli has netted three times in his last five appearances, with the winger also putting in an exceptional display against Liverpool

Yet, Jay Bothroyd believes Martinelli’s form has been too ‘up and down’ this season.

Bothroyd says Martinelli has been inconsistent for Arsenal

Speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Bothroyd explained why he believes Arsenal will fall short in the race for the title once again.

“Listen, they’ve been in it, I think they’ll do better but I just don’t think it will last,” the former Arsenal man said.

“Like I said, injuries are going to play a huge part. Partey hasn’t played for a while now, Jesus it seems like he comes in and then he’s out again for a month or two having operations on his knees.

“Martinelli’s form is a bit up and down, I think the only consistent performers I mean this season if I’m honest has been the back line, they’ve been pretty consistent, good record.

“And then I’m saying Declan Rice, Odegaard and Saka. The rest of them, have been a bit inconsistent and I feel like going down to the nitty-gritty and what I call the business end of the season, these players need to be on top form.

“I’m not entirely sure, I wouldn’t bet my house on it put it that way.”

It’s hard to disagree with Bothroyd’s verdict on Martinelli after a fairly underwhelming first half of the campaign for the 22-year-old.

But the talented winger has put in some improved displays in recent weeks and could be finding his best form at an ideal time for the Gunners.

With Arsenal set to return to Champions League action against Porto this week, depth will be more important than ever as we approach the business end of the season.

Should Martinelli rediscover the brilliant form he managed last term, that would be a huge boost for Arteta’s side.
