Jason Cundy urges Chelsea to retry signing ‘elite’ star who they failed to buy in summer

Jason Cundy has urged Chelsea to retry signing a top European footballer they were negotiating with during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea were active during the summer, with the board once again financially backing Enzo Maresca in an attempt to strengthen the squad in all areas of the pitch.

Chelsea signed Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Alejandro Garnacho, among others, but they didn’t invest as much money into the defensive side of the squad.

Many fans were disappointed with this, including Cundy, who believes Chelsea need to assess the situation during the January transfer window.

Jason Cundy wants Chelsea to sign Mike Maignan in January

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has been seen as an issue for several years among fans, with people unconvinced by Robert Sanchez.

Filip Jorgensen failed to impress in midweek against Lincoln City, which caused alarm bells among supporters who now want to see the club resolve the issue once and for all.

Jason Cundy spoke about the situation on talkSPORT, and he urged Chelsea to try to sign Mike Maignan after failing to buy him in the summer, despite negotiations taking place.

“January is coming, he will walk on a free. I wonder whether they’ve decided we will get ourselves through until January and then go back in again and see whether we can take him in January.

“If we are after him in August, why wouldn’t we be after him in January? I think they felt a little bit put out with one of the deals that went the other way a couple of years ago.”

Chelsea had attempted to sign Maignan during the summer, but despite agreeing to personal terms with the shot-stopper, they couldn’t reach a deal.

TBR Football understands that Chelsea are preparing a bid for Maignan during the January transfer window, though, as they have continued to monitor him throughout the season.

Alisson Becker has praised Mike Maignan’s goalkeeping

Maignan is highly rated as a goalkeeper within Europe, which is why Chelsea have been interested in signing him.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has previously praised Maignan during a press conference ahead of their game against AC Milan last season.

“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world. The quality of goalkeepers has really increased, Mike Maignan is within this elite.”

A move to the Premier League would allow Maignan to test Alisson’s assessment, and if Cundy gets his way, that will happen in a Chelsea shirt.
