Jan Bednarek has revealed that he was about to join West Ham United on transfer deadline day, but he then rejected them and moved to Aston Villa instead.
The final day of the summer transfer window was a frantic one for many clubs. The Hammers and Villa were no different, but it’s Steven Gerrard’s side that came out on top, at least in the race for Bednarek.
Jan Bednarek says he chose Aston Villa over West Ham on transfer deadline day
On deadline day, both Villa and West Ham were heavily linked with a move for Bednarek, who was surplus to requirement at Southampton following Duje Ćaleta-Car’s arrival.
The Pole, branded as a ‘very aggressive’ player, was a wanted man, and it looked almost certain at one point that he was on his way to West Ham United.
However, Bednarek has now revealed that when he had to make a decision between the Hammers and Aston Villa on what was an ’emotional day’, he snubbed Moyes and decided to sign for Gerrard’s side in the end.
He told The Independent: “It was an emotional day.
“One minute I am going to West Ham, another minute Villa. There were a lot of conversations with Southampton and all the managers. I ended up at Villa and I’m really happy with the decision. It was a good decision.
“It wasn’t easy because if you have another option you have to take the decision like an adult and this is real life. It was a tough problem but a good problem.
“I’m really happy I have these issues in my life, that I have to choose between two Premier League teams.”

TBR View:
West Ham wanted to sign a new central defender on transfer deadline day, but their move was dependent on Craig Dawson leaving the club.
Moyes revealed yesterday that Wolves had made an offer to sign the 32-year-old and a deal even came close (Independent). However, it couldn’t be completed, and the Englishman stayed put.
Bednarek’s comments, however, tell us that he had an offer on the table from West Ham, but he decided to reject that in favour of a move to Aston Villa.
It will be interesting to see how he fares at Villa Park.
