Aston Villa are really pushing to sign Southampton defender Jan Bednarek, and they are very optimistic about getting a deal done in the coming days.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who revealed in an early-morning tweet that talks between the two clubs over a transfer have been progressing really well.

Fabrizio Romano says Aston Villa are pushing to sign Jan Bednarek

Aston Villa weren’t really planning on signing another central defender this summer after Diego Carlos’ £26 million (Sky Sports) arrival from Sevilla at the start of June.

However, a new centre-half has become a necessity now.

Carlos suffered a really serious Achilles injury that could keep him out for as long as nine months. He will miss most of this season as a result, which is a real shame.

Gerrard is really keen to bring in a new centre-back now to cover for Carlos, and it looks like Saints star Bednarek could be the one coming through the door before the window shuts.

Romano has revealed that Villa are optimistic about getting a deal done, which is set to be an initial loan with an option to buy him permanently at the end of this season.

The journalist tweeted: “Aston Villa are pushing to sign Jan Bednarek, talks are progressing well as @greggevans40 called – now club optimistic to get it done soon.

“Been told it’s an initial loan deal, could include a buy option clause. Negotiations will continue during the weekend.”

TBR View:

Bednarek has been in the Premier League for over five years now, and he has played more than 150 games for Southampton in all competitions.

Branded as ‘very aggressive’ by his manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, he would be a very smart signing for Villa, especially on loan until Carlos recovers from his injury.

The Pole started Southampton’s first two games of the season, but Hasenhuttl left him on the bench in their 2-1 win over Leicester City last weekend.

If Romano’s right and negotiations are progressing over a transfer, we expect the 26-year-old to not play against Manchester United at noon today.
