Jamie Carragher says Arne Slot is going to put one of his new signings on the bench this weekend

Liverpool are back in action this weekend after what feels like a long international break.

The Reds have something of a soft landing on Sunday as they face Burnley at Turf Moor in a game where they are heavy favourites.

Of course, this represents Liverpool’s first match since the signing of Alexander Isak.

Isak joined Liverpool on deadline day in a British-record deal, and excitement is palpable around the striker’s potential debut.

There’s an argument to make that Isak’s debut should be delayed for the Champions League, but you don’t pay £125m for a player to not play.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Jamie Carragher has been discussing the role Isak will play vs Burnley, and he reckons the striker will only make a cameo appearance vs Burnley.

Alexander Isak will be on the bench vs Burnley

Carragher was asked whether he thinks Isak will immediately come into the starting XI for Liverpool this weekend.

The pundit was quick to note that he thinks Isak will come off the bench for the final 20 minutes of the game, with Ian Wright agreeing, noting that he hasn’t played much football at all recently.

“Does Isak come straight in?” Carragher was asked.

“No, no, he’ll only come on for 20 minutes for us,” Carragher said.

“He’s only come off strike the other day, he’s barely been playing,” Wright said.

Best Premier League debuts off the bench

Isak could be set to make his Premier League debut off the bench this weekend, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t still make a big impact for Liverpool on Sunday.

Indeed, we’ve already seen this season that Arne Slot’s substitutes can turn games on their heads with Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa scoring vital goals already this season.

Meanwhile, a number of strikers over the years have made big impacts on their debuts off the bench.

Sergio Aguero is perhaps the most exciting example here as he scored twice and assisted once after making his Man City debut from the bench.

Of course, Liverpool fans will remember Anthony Martial scoring on his Manchester United debut against the Reds too.

Isak may only get a few minutes this weekend, but he could still make a big impact in his first game.
