Liverpool sent shockwaves throughout world football this summer as they embarked on a spending spree of nearly £450 million.
The Reds are notoriously known for remaining reserved in the transfer market and, in the past, have only spent big fees when similar money has been recouped through sales.
Nevertheless, Alexander Isak’s £125m arrival from Newcastle United on deadline day marked the second player in the club’s history who was bought for over £100m, with the other being, of course, Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool have certainly looked to capitalise on their status as Premier League champions and sought to significantly improve the squad with six new first-team stars and approximately £190m worth of talent sold.

However, Jamie Carragher believes there are still holes in the title-winning squad which the club have failed to address, and the Reds legend suggested that it could cost them the title this season.
Liverpool are one injury away from a crisis
When discussing Liverpool’s failed move for Marc Guehi on The Overlap, Carragher suggested that the Reds’ lack of depth at centre-back could soon become a problem for Arne Slot.
“I think there’s one situation where Liverpool, that’s the one area where – listen, three games in, they’ve got nine points out of nine, probably not played that well, so we probably all say big favourites Liverpool (for the title).
But that is the one area that could come back and blow up, I would imagine, in the face because they haven’t really got what Guehi was giving Liverpool was competition at centre back. They haven’t got that. They’ve got two starters and two understudies.
You know, Joe Gomez is injury-prone himself, and the young lad who’s only 18, I think, come from Italy, going to be a great prospect, but if you think if one of them had to play for a couple of months, you know it’s a big difference.”
TBR Football understands Guehi will remain committed to Crystal Palace despite the disappointment of having his move to Anfield collapse at the final stages.
Indeed, widespread reports suggest that Liverpool have no intention of returning to the table for Guehi in January and will now wait to sign the England international on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Guehi is expected to be “the most in-demand” free agent on the market next summer, and although the Reds will be saving money in the long haul, their decision to haggle over the transfer fee for weeks could ultimately backfire.
Joe Gomez’s fitness record at Anfield leaves a lot to be desired, as does Ibrahima Konate’s. Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni is unlikely to make his first start for Liverpool until he has settled into life in England.
Liverpool will face competition for Marc Guehi in 2026
Real Madrid are monitoring Guehi after his proposed move to the Reds collapsed, and the La Liga giants are not going to be the only club to rival Liverpool next summer.
Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Barcelona are reportedly ready to throw their hats into the ring, and the trio can offer Guehi the chance to become an immediate starter, something he is not guaranteed at Anfield.
Furthermore, it is likely Liverpool could be a less enticing prospect for Guehi should Slot fail to win the Premier League title for a second consecutive season.
The Reds faithful are all too aware of how injuries can derail a title charge, and should Slot find himself desperate for options at centre-back between now and January, perhaps Liverpool will have to bite the bullet and pay whatever Palace demand for Guehi rather than risk losing out in the summer.
