Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future remains up in the air.
The Egyptian’s contract is up at the end of the season, and, as of yet, there hasn’t been any concrete breakthrough in terms of a renewal.
However, there have been some signs that Salah could be open to staying at Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano says that Salah is happy at Liverpool, and now James Pearce has shared his verdict on what could happen.
Indeed, according to Pearce, speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, he’s getting the impression that Salah does want to stay at Liverpool, but the offer the Reds put on the table has to be right.

Mohamed Salah may want to stay at Liverpool
Pearce shared the impression he gets on Salah’s future.
The journalist says that Salah wants to stick around, but he will want a decent contract, claiming that he would be unlikely to sign a new one-year deal.
“I get the impression that Salah wants to stick around. But of course, it’s got to be the kind of deal that he feels that adequately kind of rewards his value and enduring importance to the club.”
“And we know that Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, you know, are wary of over-committing funds to players in the twilight of their career. And of course, Salah will turn 33 next June.
So it’s the way that Liverpool go about things, and certainly the way that Michael Edwards, how he did things previously and how I’m sure is the process.
“Again, now with him at the helm as FSG CEO of football is almost, you have to take that emotion out of it. And despite everything that Salah has achieved up to this point, you know, if he wants for argument’s sake, and we’re not privy to the length that he would want.
“I can’t see a situation where he would sign, say a 12 month extension, I’m sure he would want two or three years. So say it was a three year deal, you know, that would take him up to his 36th birthday, essentially.”
What is Liverpool’s contract policy?
Salah is seemingly open to staying at Liverpool, but, as Pearce says, he will have to receive the right sort of contract offer if he is to remain at Anfield.
Liverpool, much like many other top clubs, don’t like handing out long-term contracts to older players, but they’re not against re-signing ageing players to new deals.
| Over-30s to sign Liverpool contracts under FSG | Age at time | Length of contract | Year signed |
| James Milner | 33 | Three years | 2019 |
| James Milner | 36 | One Year | 2022 |
| Jordan Henderson | 31 | Four Years | 2021 |
| Wataru Endo | 30 | Three Years | 2023 |
| Kolo Toure | 32 | Two years | 2013 |
| Kolo Toure | 34 | One year | 2015 |
| Steven Gerrard | 33 | Two years | 2013 |
As you can see, Liverpool are open to giving out new deals to older players, and sometimes, they do buck the trend and give out those long-term deals.
Jordan Henderson received a new four-year deal at the age of 31, so Salah may yet get what he wants as handing out a long-term deal to a player over the age of 30 isn’t unprecedented.
That said, players such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino were ultimately released soon after they entered their 30s.
Virgil van Dijk is also in a similar boat, and Liverpool need to make a big decision on the Dutchman’s future too.
These contract situations remain some of the most pressing issues at Anfield right now.
