‘I've been critical’: Chris Sutton wowed by ’outstanding’ Everton star at Euro 2020
Chris Sutton has been wowed by the England form of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at Euro 2020 this summer.
Pickford, 27, has been one of England’s standout players this tournament so far en route to the quarter-finals of the international competition.
The shot-stopper impressed in a 2-0 win for the Three Lions over Germany on Tuesday night, so he’s now got four clean sheets from four matches.
Gareth Southgate’s side are the only country not to concede in the competition.
Pundit Sutton has given huge praise to the Everton number one for his England displays. He admits doubts over him in the past, but he can’t deny his form.
“The Everton goalkeeper has enjoyed an outstanding Euro 2020. I’ve been critical of Pickford myself, and he is proving his critics wrong with each passing clean sheet,” Sutton said.
“That’s four in a row at this tournament now. He’s been a calming influence in between the sticks, making no mistakes and playing in a smart way.
“His temperament seems to have improved, with Pickford recently revealing how he’d been seeing a sports psychologist.
“He’s heavily criticised whenever he isn’t playing well, so let’s give the 27-year-old the credit he deserves for his performances now.”
Pickford in current England form is a top goalkeeper
Yes, Pickford has been a little inconsistent during his Everton career.
However, he finished last season strongly in the final few months, and he’s carried that form straight into the summer.
It’s obvious he turns his game up another notch when representing England, something that certain players just have in their DNA.
The Toffees goalkeeper has popped up with some brilliant individual saves throughout the tournament. For example, against Germany he tipped over a thunderous goalbound effort from Kai Havertz.
There is real confidence when it comes to the defence going into the quarter-final with Ukraine.
