‘It’s ridiculous’: Jermaine Jenas slams what £26m Tottenham player did in the last five minutes of yesterday’s game

Jermaine Jenas slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal for what he did in the last five minutes against Sporting Lisbon on BT Sport.

Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sporting last night but will feel aggrieved after Harry Kane had a last minute winner ruled out by VAR.

Antonio Conte’s men put in a poor first-half display and fell behind to a brilliant solo goal from former Spurs man Marcus Edwards.

But his side came out with more attacking intent in the second-half and eventually found an equaliser through Rodrigo Bentancur in the 80th minute.

Royal was introduced as a late substitute right after Spurs grabbed their equaliser. But the £26million man was on the receiving end of some criticism after attempting a no-look pass in the last five minutes of the game.

Spurs were knocking on the door for a winner and piling huge amounts of pressure on Ruben Amorim’s men.

As the pressure was building, Royal found himself with plenty of space on the right-hand side.

The Spurs defender had time to either pick a pass or deliver a cross into the Sporting penalty area. But instead, he attempted a no-look pass to the overlapping Bryan Gil and completely overhit it.

The ball went out for a Sporting goal-kick and Jenas blasted the Brazilian on BT Sport last night.

He said: “It’s ridiculous. If you’re going to do it at least have the quality to do it.

“You’re just letting the team off the hook.”

It was a poor decision from Emerson at the time but just minutes later, he thought he had set-up Kane for the winner in the very last minute of the game.

The Brazilian headed Ivan Perisic’s cross back across the box and Kane finished brilliantly to beat the Sporting goalkeeper.

But after a four-minute check by VAR, the goal was disallowed, much to the anger of Antonio Conte and his side.

Spurs missed an opportunity to qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League last night and will now have to go to Marseille and pick up at least a draw next week.
