'Interesting': Leeds United may be back in with a chance of signing 'extraordinary' £30m player now - journalist
Journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Leeds United may be back in with a chance of signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha now.
Leeds will seemingly be in the market for attacking reinforcements in January after missing out on some key targets over the summer.
Jesse Marsch aimed to bring in the likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Bamba Dieng and Cody Gakpo. But of course, all three moves didn’t materialise due to different factors.
The Whites have been boosted by Rodrigo’s form as the Spaniard has been lethal in-front of goal this season. The 31-year-old has bagged nine goals in the Premier League, but Patrick Bamford is yet to get off the mark after struggling with injuries over the past year.
Leeds have been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid forward Cunha, with the Evening Standard claiming Marsch’s men are worried about potential interest from Chelsea.
Yet, in the latest update on Cunha’s future, it seems that Wolves are the side who are pressing ahead to secure a deal for the striker. But Leeds haven’t been ruled out of the race just yet.
Leeds back in for Cunha
Jones has told GiveMeSport that Leeds could yet sign Cunha, providing Wolves fail to complete a deal.
“If Wolves can’t tie it up, then it will be one to look out for,” the transfer insider said.
“I was sceptical of Leeds’ interest at first, but there are actually some interesting factors that could make this doable.”
Cunha is attracting plenty of interest as he looks set to move away from the Spanish capital. The Athletic reported just last week that the 23-year-old is open to leaving Diego Simeone’s side.
The outlet also claims that Arsenal are eyeing a potential move for Cunha after Gabriel Jesus picked up an injury at the World Cup.
The ‘extraordinary’ forward has only managed managed to register two assists this season after a promising debut campaign last time out.
Leeds have a prolific goal scorer of their own in Rodrigo but there are still doubts over his injury record. Cunha would certainly add depth to the Leeds frontline and at 23, he still has plenty of time to improve his game.
The Brazilian hasn’t proven himself to be a prolific goal scorer but his versatility could be an attractive attribute for Marsch. He’s capable of playing across the front-three and with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea monitoring his situation, he’s clearly a talented player.
Mundo Deportivo recently claimed that Atletico are open to selling Cunha for around £30 million. At that price, he could represent a good opportunity for Leeds to bolster Marsch’s attacking options.
